The Edinburgh Group will be widely accepted as an effective group within IFAC, and with other key stakeholders, for championing issues affecting SMPs/SMEs, developing nations and professional accountants in business in the context of the advancement of the accountancy profession internationally.

Aims and Objectives

The main aims of the Group are to:

  1. Identify, on an ongoing basis, issues affecting SMPs/SMEs, developing nations and professional accountants in business in the context of the international advancement of the accountancy profession and help to develop effective policies on these for action by IFAC
  2. Advocate for a proper balance of interests between the various sectors of the profession represented in IFAC
  3. Support the development of the profession in developing nations.

The specific objectives of the Group are to:

  1. Provide a forum for the exchange of views on issues affecting SMPs/SMEs, developing nations and professional accountants in business, and how they should be addressed within the processes for the international advancement of the accounting profession.
  2. Strengthen the Group to become a broader coalition (to include the major geographic regions and the emerging economies) and to promote the interests of developing countries
  3. Influence IFAC, by championing SMPs, SMEs, the profession in developing nations and professional accountants in business issues, to operate in a balanced manner for the entire profession.
  4. Carry out research and produce policy papers on relevant issues
  5. Carry out any other activities considered necessary to realise the vision for the Group.
